Review on ๐Ÿพ Hurtta Outback Dog Boots: Protect Your Pup's Paws with Granite Design! by Melissa Parker

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Can easily be altered to be PERFECT!

These (possibly 3 star) boots can be turned into KILLING 5 STAR boots by simply replacing the more or less useless original strap. The reviewers who complain about not staying are right. The problem with the strap is: 1) too narrow 2) too long 3) velcro not sticky enough 4) disposable velcro 5) the connecting part of the strap is too small and goes all the way to the end 6) the connecting area on the boot is too small and Located on the back of the boot where it quickly clogs with mud or ice and the Velcro strap loses grip. I don't know what Hurtta's designers were thinking, but they haven't been able to do a lot of field testing in mud, slush, or deep snow. Here's the solution: 1) Buy ONE-WRAP Velcro Roll, Multipurpose, Double-Sided Self-Locking Hook and Loop Tape, Reusable, 4 x 3/4" Roll - Black https://www.amazon.com/VELCRO-Brand-ONE-WRAP -Double-Sided-Multi-Purpose/dp/B000LNSSVY/2) Cut the original tape as close to the edge of the boot as possible. Use sharp scissors. Don't try to rip the seam. with seam ripper. This isn't necessary and you'll most likely just make a mess. 3) Cut the length of the Velcro according to the size of the boot. For the small size (1-1/4"), I found 6-1/2" to be a good length. You want the band to go around the wrist about 1-1/2 times when the boot is tightened. Too long is better than too short - it's easy to trim later. 4) Sew the Velcro to the top of the boot as shown in the image below. Crochet so that the loops catch the existing hooks on the back. Just one row of stitches towards the end, forward-back-forward. Let the rest of the strap float freely over the boot. The opening of the boot is on the OUTSIDE of the foot and the Velcro should also be facing out. The sewn end should be about halfway between the center line and the inside edge. 5) Cut off the corners of the free end of the Velcro. 6) When you put your boots on, pull them tight and make sure the Velcro is snug against you. My dog is extremely energetic and freaks out in the fresh snow. He accidentally kicked his boots out until I made this mod. Now everything is in order. I can't say he loves her, but he accepts her, and he definitely hated being picked up as we walked the city's (intolerably) salty sidewalks. By the way, if your dog is new to boots, take your time. I spent a week teaching my friend how to take them. A shoe in a minute on the first day with lots of goodies. We worked up to four boots for 10 minutes indoors (5 days) then we started going out into the yard. On day 8 we took a walk around town on muddy sidewalks and it was SO WHAT WORTH seeing him jumping over ugly piles of rock salt and mud.
