After much searching I decided to take a risk and dye the sofa covers. They turned out wonderful with this color. I wanted light blue, so I used an entire pack with about twice the material I needed (10 pounds, for example). I also rinsed the material before painting, dried it and then moistened it again. I dissolved the paint bag separately in warm water and then poured it out (into the front loader). Despite numerous reports of adding salt, I didn't because 1) it would make the paint sticky, which I wasn't sure I wanted; and 2) salt is associated with inconsistent dye application.
