All my West Coast colleagues praise the Schoeps CMC6 as the Cadillac of dialog room microphones. But it will cost you about 3-4 times more. Then you still need an outdoor shotgun! (Don't make the mistake of using the same mic indoors and outdoors.) Some say the Sennheiser ME66 can work both indoors and outdoors, but that's a compromise. The reality is that what makes a shotgun highly directional also makes it prone to ceiling reflections. I believe only hypercardioid/supercardioid can be used for indoor work. At this price point the only other mic I would consider would be a matching pair of Michael Jolie's modified Octava MK12. A few friends have told me that the RODE NTG-2 (advertised as a supercardioid shotgun) handles rumble both indoors and out quite well. You have to take their word for it. Anyway, I bought the AT4053b for indoor use and wasn't disappointed. It's fairly flat in speech, sharp and crisp, responsive and seems to handle dialogue very well. If Schoeps is the Cadillac, then it's the Buick of home mics. The HPF reduces rumble and wind noise, and using a 10dB pad can make all the difference when it comes to capturing that screaming and banging on the table or creating a messy mess. I cannot recommend this microphone for this purpose. and in this price range.
