Smoke alarms are difficult to buy for big name manufacturers given the range of options currently available and the general lack of standardized independent testing. Some areas have specific local codes, so it's best to consult your local fire protection specialist when shopping. The basics are known: ionization detectors are best for fast, smoldering fires, but bad for smoking, smoldering fires. Photovoltaics, like these Mosuo brands, do best on smoldering, smoldering fires, but poorly on fast, blazing fires. As part of the updated UL standard, manufacturers will reportedly no longer be able to produce single-sensor (photoelectric only or ionization only) smoke detectors. Until then, installing a combination of both types will likely maximize the potential for warning residents of an apartment fire. Again, these Mosuo detectors are photoelectric only (without the built-in CO detection). What I love about these Mosuo detectors is the inclusion of carbon monoxide detection (an entirely different issue than fire detection, but a very important safety feature), UL certification, internal self-testing, and ten-year lithium battery life for easy installation (no hardwiring ) and, since the detectors have a limited lifetime beyond which they can no longer warn, signal when the device needs to be replaced. They also have a not unattractive low profile.
