After a lot of research and usage the Shapton Pro series and the Shapton Kuromaku series are exactly the same in terms of performance. These are Shapton stones sold in Japan. The official reason Shapton stated they made another series for the States is because they were made for the US climate, not the high humidity in Japan, the people of the States were cracking rocks . hence the Shapton Pro series. People say they sell cheaper in Japan because Shapton doesn't have as many fans as here in the US. Now remember that when you buy these stones, although Shapton, the warranty is void and they don't do anything if your stones start to break. Which I think is kind of scaremongering because I've never had a problem with the Kuromaku series. Of course if you live in the desert there is some risk of hacking, but I'd still be curious what the result would be. Save some money, buy the Kuromaku series because the performance is exactly the same. So why spend twice as much on stones just for a guarantee you most likely won't be using anyway. Now I know there is a difference in grain between this Shapton 12k Kuromaku and the Pro 15k at 100x magnification, sharpening and sharpening is exactly the same, so save $60.
