Review on Sonos Beam - Smart TV Sound Bar with Built-in Amazon Alexa - Black by Mark Albright

Sonos experience made easy

I have an LG OLED and a Beam and I have Dolby Digital audio processing lag versus ARC and optical out which is mentioned every day on the Sonos community forums. Seriously, this is the best home theater review on Sonos bellows. Beam suffers from a 0.4 second audio delay compared to video when playing Dolby Digital audio. It's very noticeable. The beam just doesn't work with LG OLED displays and/or some Sony TVs. This is a HUGE disclaimer and we hope people read it before purchasing. In my opinion, Sonos was quick to bring this product to market. They make great music speakers, but they're not ready for TV speakers. Incompatibility with leading TV brands is unrealistic these days. Especially with a high-end product like this. Another problem I encountered is the codec support. Sonos has DD support and nothing else. It's a shame. Every other soundbar manufacturer supports more than 1 codec. Nowadays Dts, Vision, atmos, DD+ should be supported. All of them are widely used in the industry. According to the Sonos forums, the current solution is to buy additional aftermarket hardware (a $50 HDMI optical splitter) and ditch the LG OLED entirely. This fixes the lag issue but then completely breaks Netflix and Revain Prime Videos which use DD+ for their high quality videos. Everyone watches Netflix these days but I think Sonos doesn't support DD+ and since you're bypassing the TV now it doesn't convert DD+ to DD and you have no sound or you have to go into the settings every time you do something. then play and switch to stereo. This decision also removes support for ARC and CEC, one of Beam's greatest strengths. The other solution I see is forcing PCM, which is stupid because you lose Dolby Digital entirely and just buy a 400 speaker that now only supports stereo, which you can probably get for less than a hundred bucks. The speaker sounds great, but the amount of compatibility issues and workarounds required to make this work is absolutely insane. People say it's not rocket science. But I'm literally a NASA rocket scientist and even I can't get this to work properly. I really hope people read this comment before buying. I wish I had known many of these issues beforehand.

Pros
  • Build your system - add Sonos One SL for surround sound or Sonos Sub for extra bass. Connect to other Sonos speakers for great sound in any room.
