I bought this for my friend who is a solo singer/guitarist. She had to turn the gain down on everything she had because the performance of that mic clipped everything, and left the settings the same as her Shure SM58. The level of noise reduction "out of the cone" is extremely impressive. I recorded my girlfriend using a cheap studio condenser mic (MXL V67G) but since then I've started recording her instead. The sound is very transparent as it doesn't seem to emphasize the mids or highs like many live mics do. I was thinking of the preamp as a gift but I don't think I need it at the moment. She uses a Switch, so the upgrade is $20. I didn't hear any pops from the switch so this is a very good quality indicator. It's big and has enough resistance that I don't think it will switch accidentally. My girlfriend uses a mic on a tripod, so that's not a decent measure of how easily it can accidentally "switch off". I highly recommend this for a single singer, but not for a shared mic; The out-of-cone noise reduction is supernatural.
