This mattress pad is the cheapest mattress pad made of polyethylene film. Polyethylene helps reduce the release of gases from the mattress; it also does everything else advertised here - against dust mites, against bed bugs, etc. They are difficult to remove and wash. To get around this, here's what we do: Plug it into the mattress (if the mattress is new, give it a few weeks or months to deflate as much as possible). Then put a washable mattress pad lined with PU or TPU, filled with polyester or cotton and covered with cotton fabric. This adds cushioning and eliminates the horribly sweaty feel of polyethylene. Raw fitted sheet with 100% cotton face. Spills or accidents then only require washing the installed tread and plate. The polyethylene zip layer is really just a new "skin" on the mattress. It should never come off. This is especially important if you are dealing with a bed bug infestation. In this case you CANNOT remove the zipper protection! Our built-in protectors are only $20-$30. So for $35-50 we can get healthy, clean mattresses from relatively cheap conventional mattresses. We have many children and we cannot afford to buy latex/wool/organic cotton mattresses for all of them! This is a close second. Thanks Allerase! My suggestion to Allerease - MAKE IT SHART SIZED! I am buying one of the double sizes to swaddle a crib mattress for our baby due in a few months because it is the cheapest and best product to swaddle a regular PU foam mattress for a baby. Less expensive than other polyethylene mattress pads. The excess is simply folded and removed. It is covered with a matching mattress topper and fitted sheet so the excess is not unsafe. However, a crib size in this price range would be amazing.
