To achieve a rating above 2 requires the auto off feature. you just don't always remember. I've gotten better over time, but even using regular alkaline batteries I get 2 to 3 weeks of use (it takes 4 batteries). I have tried Ultimate lithium batteries and used them for 4 months, thinking about turning them off about 80% of the time. When the battery dies, the display goes blank, making you think you've turned it off, but you really haven't, and then it drains much faster. Get a scale that's a little more expensive but turns off automatically; you will not regret it.
