Definitely not a must, but more comfortable to have from an organizational point of view. And I want to say that it looks very good! This will require some drilling in the wall to ensure it's secure. My husband was tempted to just use 3M tape but piling some brooms and mops on it is heavy and probably not worth it. The stainless steel looks great and the gray plastic holders are very durable. I had mops and brooms in there for over a week and they didn't slip at all. I love this little thing and now that I know it's magical I will always have it in my closet!
