Review on 5x5 Speedball Gel Printing Plate - Optimal Size for Efficient Printing by Michelle Langley

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Designed for use with ink

At the time of purchase this brand was the cheapest for an 8x10 plate. I have other cymbals from other companies (and homemade cymbals). What I like about this cymbal is that it's thinner, lighter, cleaner, and feels solid so it doesn't break easily. However, I was unaware at the time of purchase that it was designed to be used with inks, although other media can be used. When I used ink the colors came out beautifully and on glossy paper you could get the effect of almost being over-inked into a tie. Liquid acrylic paints also work well. However, the thicker, heavier acrylic and craft acrylic dried almost too quickly and the prints weren't as clean and I couldn't get many ghost prints. (I used cheaper acrylics, not Golden Open or Heavy Body acrylics, so that might be a factor.) Layering acrylics after the first draw to get another print with both colors didn't work either. Acrylic paints were also not that easy to clean off a plate, they washed badly and didn't rub off with baby wipes or baby oil. I had to wash off the paint. Other panels seemed to work with a heavy body and made acrylic better and easy to clean. So if you need a gel plate that works great with inks and liquid acrylics, this plate is perfect.

Pros
  • Gift Wrapping Accessory
Cons
  • Large and Bulky
