It was pretty much plug and play. All you need is a very basic knowledge of how to open a computer tower and which cables go where, and you're in business. Install the software (which should come with it), it needs to be updated via internet. Every time you want to watch a Blu-ray, an internet connection is required to see if there are any updates for that movie. I haven't found a place to disable this feature. The software is a very basic version (upgradable) but it still works great. I haven't found a movie that doesn't play yet. The most annoying part of the program: every time I open it to watch a movie, a window appears with a form that needs to be filled out to register with the company. I've filled it 4 times and it still won't stop appearing. Now I just close the window and it allows me to watch. Overall: VERY VERY SATISFIED WITH HIM.
