Paying for yourself - heating, cooling and air quality

I live in Phoenix and cooling my home with air conditioning in the summer can cost over $500 a month. I have a usage schedule based on time, so I turn off the air conditioning in the afternoons when electricity is at its most expensive. For the past few years, I've simply suffered in a house that was getting warmer by the minute. The cooler is by no means a substitute as it only cools one room, not the whole house, and it doesn't get that cold. But according to my measurements, the exiting air is 10-15 degrees colder than the ambient air. The air is humidified, but given the low humidity here, that's actually an added benefit. I think given the cost of electricity in Phoenix that will pay for itself in a month or two. But this is an extreme case. I've also used it outdoors. Normally all outdoor activities are avoided at this time of year, but I was actually able to work in the garage with this move and it came in quite handy. I don't regret the purchase at all. However, I will say that the ice compartment is a bit useless. The onset of ice did not appear to change the temperature of the exiting air significantly, and the ice melted within minutes. It would be nice to use a longer power cord, but that's easily solved with an extension cord.
