I decided to get back into yarn crafts while isolating, and decided to teach myself how to crochet with some basic metal hooks. After hours of hitting my stride with stitching, I realized that I needed some of the ergonomic ones I keep seeing in videos and browsing products. My hands ached like never before from the constant grip tension. This set looked to be a good size range and the shape looked appropriate for comfort. Since using them, I’ve been able to crochet daily with minimal discomfort. The shape is great, and the silicone grip doesn’t slide around and requires minimal effort to hold. The metal needle goes all the way through the handle, almost all the way to the bottom tip, so it’s very secure and unlikely to break. My only complaint is that my yarn doesn’t move smoothly over the metal, I can feel more friction than I’d prefer. I’ve tried a few different content yarns, acrylic and 100% cotton, and they all have more drag than my previous aluminum needles. These are supposed to be aluminum, but I suspect that there may be an an extra chrome coating of some sort over the hooks which is what makes them rough and "sticky.” I’ve had to make my stitches with more slack in the tension than how I would normally, so the resulting gauge is going to differ than the actual size needle. There was a frustrating learning curve for sure. I’d probably spend a bit more next time around on a step up in quality, just because of that detail. It’s such a repetitive craft, it makes a huge difference. Overall, great beginner set.
