I first saw this product about a year ago when a kitchen gadget blog I follow mocked it as one of those absurdly specific kitchen gadgets that nobody should own. But then I read all the positive reviews and that caught fire with interest. I bought my brother one of these for Christmas this year as he always stops by McDonalds for McMuffins and it seems like a great and relatively inexpensive gift idea. Everyone was fascinated by this little thing, and she went several hours into Christmas morning while everyone made their own sandwiches for breakfast. As soon as I got home I ordered one for myself! It's an attractive, compact device that would fit right on your home countertop, yet is small enough to stash almost anywhere. Operation is simple: plug in, wait for the green light to come on, then add the ingredients. Unfortunately, there is no built-in timer, but I found 4 minutes 30 seconds perfect for me. If I forget to set the timer, I'll know it's done when the machine's lid lifts a little, meaning the egg is cooked. To find the best arrangement of ingredients, you need to experiment a little. I personally like cheese on the lower tier and ham and peppers or onion on top mixed with egg. First I beat the egg in a bowl as I don't like whole yolks; I've read some reviews saying beat the egg in the tray, but I'd be concerned about scratching the non-stick surface. A few reviewers have mentioned that the egg compartment is leaking. I noticed that it leaked on the second sandwich, apparently due to the fact that it wasn't heated enough after the first sandwich. Just be sure to shake the egg tray a little so it settles onto the plate and even if an egg has time to spill due to the high temperature, it will seal before the egg has a chance to drip down the sides. I also spray the egg tray with canola oil, which seems to help seal it in and let the egg slide out once it's done. Long story short, after an egg leaked, I didn't have this problem again except when trying to use two eggs at the same time. This is too much and will overflow the egg! The device comes with several recipe ideas and they are all great. It's an extremely versatile piece of equipment, and it's good to know that you can quickly make a breakfast sandwich with better ingredients than those available at fast-food restaurants, and for a lot less. Cleaning is easy as the centers slide out and are dishwasher safe and the top and bottom plates are very easy to clean. If you are skeptical about sandwich makers, I encourage you to try this device.
