Review on Monoprice Ribbon Tweeter Bookshelf Speakers by Danielle Landry

Revainrating 5 out of 5

They're great as standalone bookshelf speakers, but as 2.1 or 4.1 they really shine!

Specifications These speakers are designed to have a frequency range of 60Hz to 20kHz but after checking the frequency response they could be heard from 55Hz to 17kHz. Each has a 6.5" woofer and 4" ribbon tweeter and weighs 6 pounds, making them a good choice if you plan to wall mount them. rear bracket. They are for 6 ohms, 60 watts, max 30W RMS. Sensitivity is 87dB at 1 watt at 1 meter which means they are very efficient and produce quite a bit of sound with relatively little power. Tweeks So when I first started using these speakers I was a bit disappointed in them, the highs were very bright and the lows didn't have the punch I wanted. At the end of this review I will explain how to fix all the problems that started this column. So I decided to add my 10" Polk subwoofer, powered by my main system, via the speaker wire on the back of the subwoofer and set the crossover to around 90Hz (if you don't know how to put it on YouTube sees) and after plugging this configuration into my 10 x 15 foot bedroom, wow what a powerful source for music and movies. The highs, which were initially too intense, were now perfectly balanced harmoniously with a very accurate boomy low-end, and when the speakers broke the sound only got better. Instead of talking forever about how good they sound now with a subwoofer, I'm going to get down to business and tell you exactly what I bought for my semi-homemade bedroom surround sound. 4.1 surround sound with voice activation for around $350. total! After many variations and experiments I finally found a really good setup. Here's what I currently have: 4 Monoprice bookshelf ribbon tweeters ($100) 1 Monoprice Select active 8" subwoofer ($100 direct from Monoprice) 1 Fosi BT20a Bluetooth 4.2 amp model ($77) 1 Lehou 24-volt 6-amp adapter upgrade for amps ($13). ) 1 echo dot from Revain ($40) 1 optical Dingsun to RCA cable (with remote) to adjust the TV volume on my new setup ($20) and 100 feet of Mediabridge 14 gauge speaker wire. ($15) First let me say that speaker placement is all about speaker placement and I highly recommend searching YouTube for subwoofer and speaker placement tutorials, it makes a world of difference. For my setup I placed the 2 front speakers about 7 feet apart. away and about 3 feet off the floor, pointing slightly up, and I placed the 2 surround speakers in the back 2 corners of my room, lying on my back, facing the ceiling so that the sound is diffused differently than the front 2 speakers (this one configuration is key for movies and is actually very similar to music), it brings the whole room to life. The subwoofer occupies about 1/5 of the total length of the room (e.g. if your room is 20 feet long, place the subwoofer about 4 feet from the wall opposite where you want to listen. This will smooth out the bass distributed to avoid peaks and dips. Now that I have everything where I want it, I just ran the cables in parallel (also found on You Tube) back to the amp and then connected to the line on the subwoofer and the crossover set to 90Hz so that all frequencies were a special driver and everything is in sync (note that connecting all 3 speaker terminals to the 2 front speaker jacks might be a problem, but it will work) BTW I did all the calculations for nominal Loudspeaker handling vs. power rating for amplifier and parallel operation - perfectly combined with some reserve power, which means you can turn the volume very loud can turn up and the amplifier does not clip. Then I connected the television to the digital converter and connect the cinch connections to the amplifier. I then connected my Echo Dot to the amplified bluetooth 4.2 receiver via the Alexa app and checked the bluetooth audio, then switched to RCA for my movie surround sound and they both sound really good! Obviously this has limitations, not Dolby or DTS but still very realistic sounding. The subwoofer fills these speakers really well and the ribbon tweeters can handle high volumes without distortion. Acoustic songs just fascinate me, the level of detail allows me to hear the music in a whole new way. The fosi amp works great by the way, it has bass and treble controls and at 100 watts per channel it offers enough power for high volumes and when I turn the volume down there is literally no hissing or hissing. Very quiet! Excellent dynamic range for movies and very good picture with my configuration. Just remember to move the side speakers so you can't hear them directly. The idea is to blend the sides discreetly by pointing the tweeters up instead of towards you. The reason for this long review is that I am so pleased with this level of sound and functionality for such little money that I just feel compelled to share it, I hope it helps. Amazon's return policy allowed me to try different amps and speakers, so thank you for this Amazon! Another happy customer.Ps. If I had to fill a larger room, I would go for a Bic America 12-inch subwoofer. In the future I might upgrade to Andrew Jones' Pioneer sp-bs22-lr or the debut Elac b6.2 for a little more money, but to be honest I'm so happy with the sound I have, it's going to be a while take time for the sharp feelings to go away.
