I'm pretty good with woodworking tools and was thinking of making a similar template out of scrap wood and sealing it with polyurethane. Although it was a great design. First, the holes are color coded so you can easily see which holes go with which plants. Using markers to make identical colored dots on the seed packets takes the guesswork out of you. Second, I wasn't a fan of the large piece of plastic, but it washes out very easily. I'd probably use a 1/2" piece of wood, but the edges of the plastic square actually help secure the template (and make clean squares without the traditional boards or rope). It has an internal magnet so it snaps into a slot in the template itself so you don't lose it. I don't need a small shovel, but there is one. I laminated it for use in the garden but please note planting spacing may vary. For example, vertically grown vine varieties can be planted more densely than bush varieties. The weakest part of this product is the small detachable seed hopper. I haven't used it and don't see the need for it. It will be easy to lose, although it fits perfectly in the center hole, almost acting like a "leg" in the middle.
