As mentioned by other reviewers you need to have the correct diameter hose attached to the "output end" for this item to work. There is another version of this product here at Revain that already comes with the correct hose, but I think it's only 8ft long. Luckily we had a pool vacuum hose that fit EXACTLY perfectly, plus the fact that our pool vacuum hose is over 20 feet (maybe close to 30) long so we can direct the water exactly where we need it. (We bought this as a replacement for the drain pump, so it has to go through the basement and out the window for it to be of any use to us.) Also, if you attach the end of a garden hose and tighten it enough, there might be a small leak from the - give for incomplete compression. We fixed this as follows: - remove garden hose end - insert rubber washer - reattach garden hose end and tighten as firmly as possible (without damaging the plastic) - at this point we felt a slight "give" which could still be fitted into the washer already supplied needed a little more tucking to complete the aforementioned "incomplete seal" - then we removed the end of the garden hose again, removed the extra rubber washer and reattached - voila! Perfect seal! In any case, as you can see, it is not a plug-and-play solution. If you do get it I STRONGLY recommend doing a test run BEFORE you actually have to use it because if we tried it in a pinch it could be very painful. Aside from the initial setup, the product works flawlessly. It would have saved our basement from flooding during Hurricane Sandy, but unfortunately we never thought we'd need it. Lesson learned and we always have this thing ready for future emergencies!
