Whole-home protection, but getting it right takes effort to provide the best protection.

A few days before installing the surge protector, we had a power outage. And the GFI and the kitchen are out of order. It is important to connect the surge protector as close as possible to the point where earth and neutral enter the busbars. You will need the following materials and tools for proper installation when your switch box is upright and your mounting block is upright. at the bottom of the box. A 50A double pole circuit breaker to match your fuse box (specified in the instructions). One 12 AWG stranded red, black, green, and white wire, 60 to 90 cm (2 to 3 ft) each. May be shorter or longer depending on panel and installation location. 4 nuts for cables (yellow). Insulating tape (optional). wire stripper. Flat blade screwdriver. Especially if the switch block is part of the house entrance and is outside. Ours is outside. The installation takes longer than expected if you want to install it correctly. Depending on your experience, between 30 minutes and an hour. The instructions call for a 50A double pole circuit breaker to be installed as close as possible to the main switch. GFI kitchen. And use these positions to install a 50A circuit breaker next to the main circuit breaker. Using pliers, pry out the two connectors for the 20 amp depressed switches. The instructions also call for a sealed connection to the box, but there is no gasket for a liquid-tight connection. If the circuit breaker panel is indoors and there are no water pipes near the panel, you can install it without a hermetic connection. Or use RTV silicone sealant to seal the block to the outside of the panel. This was the option we chose. And we installed a block at the bottom of the box to protect it from rain and bad weather. A good sized bead was used to allow the RTV to pop out and fit into the box, sealing the assembly completely to the box. Using a hammer and a flathead screwdriver, knock out the plug on the underside closest to the back and pry it out with pliers. Sometimes burrs are left that need to be smoothed out. The cords that come with the unit are about 45cm long so we had to extend the red and black cords to get to the 50 amp switch at the top next to the main switch. I had to extend the green wire to connect them as close as possible to the ground lug/connection point on the ground rail. I had to extend the white wire to connect them as close as possible to the neutral input/connection point on the neutral bus. Although the unit ships with 14 AWG stranded wire, the wire size must be 12 AWG to reduce resistance. Do not use 14 gauge automotive wire as the insulation is not rated for AC. Then, for extra security, I wrapped it with electrical tape in the same direction that we turned the nuts. Then wrap it around the wire with a nut and tape it in place for extra security. Now the house is fully protected from surges. However, 120V surge protection bars are still used to provide additional protection for electronic devices. This box is added to protect the electronic controls of our new dryer and our induction range. But it also provides protection as long as the refrigerator, microwave and convection oven do not have electronic control boards, and adding 100 and 20 volt surge protection is not easy. The reason the ratings are downgraded to 4 stars is that the wire length is too short and needs to be added to make it work in this application and they do not provide a gasket available from McMaster-Carr that would match the 1- Inch hose washer fits. I didn't want to buy 100 pieces for an installation and pay shipping. If you have everything on hand, installation will take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. But since we had to walk back to the store for extra cable, it took 2 hours. Wire is relatively cheap here at $0.39 per foot. It's better to buy some more wire and cut off the excess than to go to the store again. A 2 pole 50 amp switch was also cheaper locally, costing less than $10. The reason this block got installed the way we do is as follows. because I used to work for a commercial construction company and needed to find out permits for proper installation of surge protectors and lightning protectors and mark them on the drawings. *** Updated March 2019 February and March. I saw the fuse in action. The surge came from the utility side (so you were closest to the mains) and the surge protector worked instantly, shunting the surge to ground. The lights didn't dim noticeably, but we didn't notice our computers and TVs turning off for just a second and then back on. The network filter works as it should. There was a momentary power outage when switching momentum to the ground, but the search was immediately terminated. The protector returned to normal mode. so the TV came on again. And my son's computer checked that everything was fine. We also have surge protected redundant power supplies in our computers. That extra effort to get it installed properly protected all of our electronics as well as the new washer and dryer we just bought.
