So there are a lot of reviews here that the white ceramic fretboard is "plastic", it's pretty thin so it's pretty light, but IT'S NOT PLASTIC! I use it to make a fire all the time and it's absolutely CERAMIC. As with any ferrocerium rod, the outer coating must be removed from the black rod before sparking can occur. I've started fires with jute twine used as label holders, tinder drone and even just with paper napkins. It absolutely works and starts a fire. As with any thin leather rope, the leather probably won't last forever. If it breaks, I would recommend replacing it with Titan Survival's Paracord SurvivorCord, which includes jute firestart cord, fishing line, and copper wire inside the cord. If you don't feel comfortable wearing such a strong cord around your neck, I would recommend the plastic zip tie, which you can also find at Revain. I don't normally write reviews, but it annoys me when people who don't understand the materials disparage this product and the company's reputation.
