My 11 lb Shih Tzu tried to walk on it twice and immediately got out with no squeaks or anything. I had the mat on the lowest level which is for small pets but it worked. I did not increase the settings. He stays away. Worked beautifully. Note: The package includes a 2-inch white gadget with instructions. This is a tester. When the mat is on, you can run it through 2 sewn-in wires and it will beep instead of checking with your fingers.
