Review on πŸ”¦ Black Maglite Heavy-Duty Incandescent 4-Cell D Flashlight by Jim Reinhardt

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Even good brand name batteries leak and ruin the light.

I bought this flashlight about 6 months ago. I don't remember what brand of battery it had when it arrived, but a few months later I switched batteries to Duracells. He lived in a box (horizontal) in the kitchen, in an air conditioner and in a completely dry place. Yesterday I pulled it out to look behind the fridge and it didn't work. I removed the back cover and the batteries leaked and ruined the light. Try as I might, I couldn't get the batteries out. Realizing it was beyond repair, I decided to cut it in half to see what was wrong. I ended up cutting one of the batteries and when I tried to pull the sub-battery out of the tube it wouldn't budge. I've hit it several times with a ball-peen hammer, but to no avail. The batteries had corroded the aluminum tube and were so swollen that they could not be moved. I had this problem before with the exact same LED flashlight model and I don't understand it. I have streamlights at home and inovas with non-metal tubes and aluminum tubes. They are all a few years old and are all LED and I have never had a battery drain issue. When I worked as an HVAC mechanic, I always had a Maglite 2-lamp bulb in my toolbox that, despite rough treatment, never failed me. When I replaced him I think he was at least 15 years old. I'm not sure what's going on with these LED lights, but something in the design could be causing this. I will never buy LED Maglite again. This is really bad because they have always been famous for their durability and quality.
