This is a very light legging that is perfect for my purposes. I don't have to trudge through deep snow for miles, but I do have to regularly walk knee-deep in snow on my Minnesota property, and without it, the snow slides into my boots, leaving my ankles cold and wet. Once I had these gaiters, I attached the bottom strap (first time is all you need - just leave it attached), insert your heel into the strap, bring the gaiters forward and fasten the Velcro. I can also use a zipper, but velcro is quick and usually all I need.
