Splinters can be the cause. I don't know why they fail so quickly, but if your TV loses sound or picture, or your internet freezes or cuts out for 5-10 minutes, it's almost always a bad splitter. I had all of these problems until I replaced the splitter with this one. and it was like day and night! My last splinter lasted about two years. Those installed by Comcast typically lasted a year. So don't try to save money and buy a cheap splitter. This is well sealed with plastic caps over the connectors. When things finally get bad I will update this review to say how long this has been.
