40GB works! How it worked for me 27 " iMac with Retina 5K display.

Uses existing Apple 8GB RAM. Screen faces down with stem of large Apple logo pointing away from you. Start in top slot and work down Install in this order Slot 1: 4GB Apple Slot 2: 16GB OWC Slot 3 4GB Apple Slot 4: 16GB OWC This worked for me! If everything is done correctly, your iMac will boot with no problems. Go to About This Mac, Storage. At the top you should see two 16GB slots. This also worked for me. Tried the reverse and got a prohibition sign on boot. Please see the pictures , if it's confusing.
