Many (most?) Toshiba laptops have a known defect where the sound chip starts to overheat - Only the defect shows up after the warranty has expired. The sound chip switches itself off if it overheats. Usually the only "fix" is to use the headphone jack as a workaround. These mini speakers aren't just speakers, they have a built-in PC sound card. This means you only need to connect your speakers to a USB port and it offers sound, amplification and speaker function, so it's a good all-in-one solution to restore sound to your laptop, tablet or other device . Board sound no longer works. Other similar products require a connection to both the USB port and the headphone jack - not a good solution if the headphone jack is already worn out or if your sound chip is defective and/or installed in a Toshiba product. Before I found it we had to use a bluetooth solution with an external speaker with batteries etc, it was too much hassle when all we wanted was a simple cheap plug and play solution like this. The speakers don't deliver rich, immersive bass. Impressive surround sound that I wasn't expecting at this price point and with limited power available from each USB port. The speakers sounded exactly as I expected, even a bit louder than I expected. They sound very similar to Toshiba's original laptop speakers. Only unlike Toshiba products they work! This was exactly the cheap solution I was looking for to recover audio on a crappy Toshiba product.
