One in ten may work partially. The connector consists of 4 thin pieces of metal, each piece connects a light filament on one end and a wire on the other end. These pieces of metal are paper thin and sharp on each end. The end that connects to the light string's copper contact sometimes doesn't penetrate clear silicone, and it's less likely to go through the copper to make contact. The end connected to the wire is better, but hardly. If the punch doesn't go through all sides of the 4x2 the first time, then the pointed metal is bent, you'll need to discard the connector and use a new one. Often only three wires are connected, one is not, then you have to discard that connector and try again. Aside from razor-thin metal parts that tend to bend, a plastic lid won't work either. Once it snaps into place and you have to open it again to try again, forget it, the plastic cover won't snap back into place. I made 2 successful connections out of 20. Save your money, avoid disappointment and failed projects, don't buy and use these connectors.
