Review on Saucony Men's Switchback Walking Shoes in Classic Black: Maximum Comfort and Durability by Ricardo Anderson

Great special shoe, not an all-rounder

Great pair of LIGHTWEIGHT trail running shoes. Construction/BOA: I often use trail runners as hiking/casual shoes, but I think these will be dedicated trail running shoes. They're very light and have almost no drop, so don't expect a lot of arch support or anything else that will stand up to daily wear and tear. The upper is a single-layer mesh with a TPU overlay, making it very breathable but not durable. They are also not waterproof, so water and dirt can easily get into the shoe, although it dries quickly. The only real volume or padding is on the tongue to keep the tight BOA laces from cutting into your foot. Don't overtighten! I've used BOA systems on snowboard boots and bike shoes and the dials generally last longer than the shoes. I once broke a watch face in a bike accident and contacted the store where I bought them but they told me to check the BOA website first. From there I ordered a free replacement and received it within 2 days. Very easy to maintain and replace if you can handle a screwdriver. Not as easy as untying another pair of laces from another pair of shoes, but definitely not difficult. It is worth switching from Laces or Speed Laces. Fit: The minimalist shoe adapts well to the foot. The fit is excellent. I have a normal sized foot with a slightly high instep and a very high instep (the toes protrude a lot). I will add some Superfeet insoles for arch support but the rest fits great! The BOA system makes it very easy and quick to get a consistent fit every time. Great option for XTERRA or other races with transitions. Just be aware that it's VERY easy to overtighten the last, so don't overdo it. Tread: The rubber is great in light gravel and mud but lacks grip on slippery and wet surfaces. Great for dry, dusty trails with few rocks, but not for pacific northwest forests with wet roots everywhere or climbing smooth granite. I really like that the tread is consistent across the entire outsole and doesn't have large lugs in certain areas. This pattern ensures the shoe has consistent grip on pavement and tarmac without having to wait for the lugs to dig in and connect. In my opinion this shoe is great for those who want a lightweight trail runner and will use it as such. I plan to use it for short runs around the house and at the gym (because of the drip-free shape). I ride them about 100 miles a year and expect to live off it for two years.
