Review on πŸ”§ Fanimation WR501WH Ceiling Wall Control - Adjustable 3-Speed Fan and Light Control Receiver, White by Adam Shuler

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Nice switch with a fatal error

Good things first: it's an elegant switch that mounts beautifully on the wall, like any of the countless switches on the market. No surprises - the kit includes mounting screws, wire nuts, a receiver (if your fan doesn't already have one), and a screwless wall plate. The clean look of the included wall plate is marred a bit by the obtrusive "FANIMATION" lettering at the bottom, but those are minor blemishes; Use your own if you don't like it. Here's the problem though: the controller almost never works, and I think I see the problem. You see, this device is connected in series between the power and load wires in your wall; it does not require a neutral wire. Instead, the device just "vampires" what it needs out of the hot wire, and yet it seems to introduce enough noise (or voltage drop) into the line to affect the operation of the fan receiver. This effect is noticeable by the fact that when you press the button on the wall remote control, the light on the fan is slightly dimmed and the fan does not accept commands from another remote control. Release the button and you can control the fan again as usual (except wall control). It doesn't matter if you change the code on the wall control, the fan wired in series with this switch will not receive commands as long as the button is pressed. Conveniently, I have the same fan in the next room. A switch connected to the fan in room 1 controls the fan in room 2. I suspect the impact of this phenomenon will vary depending on the fan model and maybe even your home's wiring, but be aware of this when purchasing this switch may not work as expected. As they say, be careful.
