My 13 lb 1 year old dog goes mad when I try to use a toothbrush on him but doesn't mind if I use this on his teeth. I can see yellow on it after use so I know it's removing something. I've used it dry or just warm water or dog toothpaste. It washes well after use with a drop of dish soap and warm water and then air dry. I threw away the first one and after about 4-6 months started using a new one just because it seemed like a good idea but probably wasn't necessary, it didn't fall apart or anything. Combined with occasional chewing and teeth waxing, my dog's teeth are fairly clean with little staining. I assume a real brush works better if you can use it, but I'm just glad I found something that lets me use something other than my finger.
