Review on Slim 46 Inch Samsung HLT4675S 720P Flat Screen TV with HDMI by Lasaro Pranata

Revainrating 4 out of 5

"This is a Merc " - my new rating

After LOTS of online research I settled on this DLP line. Samsung seems to have cornered the DLP market with quality and features like "thin" and "ultra-thin" TVs. Very light (+/- 44 lbs), I mounted mine on a large floating shelf. Bottom Line: It's DLP. There is a color wheel, there is a bulb inside that will burn out over time (lower the brightness a bit to extend the life of the bulb), and whether there is a fan. The wheel motor cannot be heard when the device is switched on. The fan is inaudible when it's on unless you put your ear near the vent. And the lightbulb, while it seems archaic to change a lightbulb every year for up to 3 years, it seems much easier to replace a lightbulb and keep image quality lossless while your friends' plasma pixels and LCD backlight burn out time is getting too dark. These are disposable kits. The picture quality depends on the received signal. Some HD channels are better than others, that's all. Standard definition is good but not "WOW" but that's HDTV. SD is no worse than any other legacy widescreen format. Pros: Impressive image. HD is very good. Discovery Earth HD is a good test of natural colorful scenes. HD movies are more film-like than any other microdisplay or fixed pixel displays (LCD, plasma). I think plasmas are "TOO" perfect and bright. It's so unnatural. LCD displays remind me of television on my laptop. DLP captures the natural sound that would be in a movie theater. Very accurate color reproduction after adjustment. Sports programming is where this set really shines and that is primarily the purpose I bought it for. I'm very worried before football season, but now I'm going to play baseball. Detailed grass, single pebbles in the dirt in the infield, bright white home team unis.etc. Although it's only a 720p set, it's the best native resolution for sports. Almost all sports channels are broadcast in 720p (espn, fsn, abc, etc.) and not in higher resolution as movements are captured faster. This, combined with a very fast DLP chip, makes you forget about your friends' expensive plasma picture frames. If you are into this product, although you may read elsewhere, this set does not have "Cinema Mode" or "My Color Management". Actually I was looking forward to the last feature, but oh well. I believe this is the main difference between this model and the HLS-4675. Tiny, but still misleading. Also, due to the bright bulb used to illuminate the screen, light pollution escapes through the vents on the left rear of the TV. It emits bluish-white light. Perceptible only in complete darkness, but not critical. I installed a fluorescent backlight (warm white) behind the TV for watching TV in the dark to reduce eye strain and actually improve the eye's ability to process picture quality. SO.warmwhite neutralizes the side effect of the screen lighting.
