Review on WeMo Control Anywhere Assistant HomeKit by Sean Patel

Fairly reliable and good looking

I used to really believe in Lutron Caseta until I moved from my small apartment into a house. I soon found that the Lutron hub's coverage area isn't that great and you can ONLY use one repeater in a Caseta line (the first plug-in lamp dimmer acts as a repeater). This is done on purpose by Lutron to make more money off their installer models like the RA2. Anyway, the house had a first generation Wemo switch and it was difficult to set up, but once I got it working it worked fine. I decided to buy a switch and a dimmer, albeit 2 versions, and give it a try. They need a neutral wire for them to work and luckily every box had one. The only embarrassing issue for me was that sometimes I screwed in the switch and forgot I had to scan the HomeKit label on the back so I had to open it up again, but other than that I'm very happy with my choice. Siri works great in any room. Now I have to report that the house is big, about 5000 square meters. ft. and I have a huge UniFi 10G network with 5 WiFi 6 AX APs and a gateway configured with failover WANs. The performance of this network is enough for a large office, so I wasn't afraid to add many WiFi clients. If you have a small all-in-one WiFi router at home, you might not get the same coverage or experience. As for the reviews stating that LED lights start flickering after a while, this is a common problem with any dimmer. In Lutron, calibrate the lower and upper trims to avoid flicker. I think Wemo does this automatically in their app as well, but there is an option to manually tweak your settings. At the moment I have 2 Wemo dimmers and 4 switches. I used one of the shower fan switches and set it in my app to automatically turn off after 1 hour. When I leave the house I don't have mold in my shower. The possibilities of these Wemo products are endless. I just wish they had a remote like Lutron and Philips Hue. Overall I'm very happy with the purchase which was cheaper than Lutron's and didn't require a hub. Thanks for reading and YMMV.
