The tape has a sufficiently hard coating to prevent it from sticking to itself. Thus most of the thickness of the roll is the coating, not the tape. It's quite comfortable to use and doesn't try to stick to itself due to the hard cover. Glue it in place and then remove the cover. Have a sharp knife handy as it will take a little effort to loosen the corner. It sticks well enough for my use, but I use it for wood products. Leaves an unpleasant aftertaste! He claims not to leave footprints, but he definitely leaves them on the tree. Even on metal it is difficult to remove the tape. This is probably a good tape if you're mounting something you want to mount permanently. Use it to hold the pieces together while securing them with fasteners.
