I think this is an excellent lens in the same class as the 200 f2. With the D850, autofocus is instantaneous - so fast you won't even notice it's focusing, even in less-than-ideal lighting. I think the lack of VR really helps here as there is no lag during stabilization. It is significantly sharper than 105 2.8. The colors and bokeh are beautiful. If you like sharp eyes where you can count the lashes, then this is the lens for you. It's a large lens but it fits the D850 really well so I don't find any size issues. Is this the best portrait lens? This is an excellent focal length in terms of flexibility, distance and portability. I prefer the 85 reach, which I always trim a bit. I personally prefer the increased insulation of the 200 f2 and find that the 200 has slightly more vibrant colors than the 105. I really like the new 300 f4 FL. This is a great portrait lens - very sharp and with fantastic isolation. In addition, it fits comfortably in the hand and is very mobile. Minimum focus is a bit limiting and of course you have to be able to set some distance between yourself and the subject, but I have shots that I really like indoors. So for a staged shot I think 200 wins. For honest videos where I have distance and light I would go with 300. For almost everything else, 105 wins. For group or other shots, the 85 1.4 or 58 1.4 lenses (I think unjustly maligned lenses) have more flexibility. , and 300 f4 are unsurpassed in image quality and ease of use. The 200 is a beast, but in situations where size and weight are an issue, the 105 or 300 can be substituted.
