We used those horrible metal mesh things, and you know what? They are to blame for the rancid smell and the disgusting puddle of water that has accumulated in our trough. Here we thought that at the end of the aluminum mesh's life, our clothes magically got dirtier and that caused bad smells and looks. But I saw it and risked it. After we switch to them, the sink stays clean, odors are no longer disgusting, and it's actually easier to remove and install than aluminum screens.
