I don't listen to my movies at full volume, closer to 1/2. I live in a townhouse and I try to be respectful to my neighbors and I don't need it to be too loud. However, during dialogues and silent scenes, you can hear the fans. I preferred Smart mode and limited it to only 1-3 fan speeds, but 2 and 3 are too loud and 1 is mostly too loud depending on the scene. If you set smart mode, it always works. so this feature doesn't work very well at all, IMO. I've found that it's best to leave it on power level 1 all the time and it cools down by running constantly and then trying to change fan speeds. Another problem I have is that it's close to the AVR. So it actually keeps the heat inside. This means the fans must be running to counteract the extra heat caused by the vents becoming blocked. As for cooling, it works very well. I dropped 20-30 degrees but I have an air gap around the receiver and a vented media center so that's probably overkill. However, I see this as extremely useful when you have a very tight space or multiple devices are stacked on top of each other. But for a single AVR, that's more of a distraction than helpful. and for $120 I'm very frustrated that there isn't a 12v trigger I could use to turn the AVR on and off, nor a remote control. So I hope you enjoy leaving the fan running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or manually turning it off every time you're done using the AVR.
