Review on πŸ’Ύ Inateck FE2005: USB 3.0 Hard Drive Enclosure - Tool-Free SSD Case with UASP Support by Johnny Bloomer

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I think the JMicron chipset in FE2005 has some compatibility problem with Intel USB 3.0 chipsets

I bought this Inateck FE2005 and installed Samsung 850 EVO 120GB SSD but FE2005 doesn't work. When I first plugged it into a USB 3.0 port, the LED flashes blue and so on, so I'm trying to copy a huge file to check the speed and it starts at 300+ MB/s, drops but down to 0 after a few seconds. bytes/s and stops responding, file transfers usually hang at the percentage that is reached at that point. Sometimes it even causes Windows to become unresponsive until I unplug the USB cable. I decided to try this with a WD Scorpio hard drive and the write performance started out at around 35MB/s, then after a few seconds the blue LED just blinks forever and the drive becomes unresponsive, just like an SSD. I tried different USB 3.0 ports and all with the same problem. My USB 3.0 controller is Intel, and Intel makes good stuff, so it's weird. Other USB 3.0 devices work fine on the same ports, this is the only device that fails. The thing only works with a USB 2.0 port or USB 2.0 cable where I get a whopping 30MB/s. So if you want to turn your SSD into a floppy disk, you should definitely get this FE2005 enclosure. I suggest buying an external Samsung T1 Portable 250GB USB 3.0 SSD (MU-PS250B/AM) instead of this Inateck junk. UPDATE 2015/NOV/21: Inateck support has been very helpful in solving FE2005 issues. I think the JMicron chipset in FE2005 has some compatibility issues with Intel USB 3.0 chipsets. Inateck support rep told me that FE2002 (FEU3NS-1E) uses ASMedia 1053e chipset and they sent FE2002 to replace my FE2005. The chipset was unprinted so I couldn't visually confirm that it was indeed ASMedia 1053e as Inateck claims, but I researched the Vendor ID and Product ID and at least the VID matched the ASMedia brand . At the moment it seems that FE2002 works much better. Also from a functional point of view it was very difficult to connect the cable to the FE2005, it is much easier to connect the cable to the FE2002. I will be updating my rating from 1 star to 5 stars based on the performance of the FE2002 and the customer support provided by Inateck.

Pros
  • HDD case
Cons
  • No performance
