You should replace this part.
This part is an exact replacement for the original part on my 2000 XJ. Fast and quick installation, it only took a few minutes. I highly recommend replacing this part on older XJs for safety reasons. The spring in my old original part was tired and worn leaving open the possibility of my hood opening while driving which is not what you want. For a few bucks and a few minutes, you'll avoid this potential problem.
