Don't just pour old coolant (Prestone) in your Cummins, you need that, at least for my 2004.5 Cummins 5.9. Buy one more than you think you need as the official coolant capacity is 22 liters so I figured I'd need 3 gallons with little left but after sucking a lot of coolant back into the system from the overflow tank, I had to buy my 4th gallon to mix some more to fill up that tank. I drained my system about 5 times, adding distilled water back in each time, before I started getting completely clean water to drain (driving around with heat to mix it up). Then I drained it again, added 3 gallons of the required coolant and some distilled water one last time. I thought I was done, but after my first ride that overflow tank was pretty damn close to drying out. So maybe I could just put distilled water in the overflow, but since I was too cautious not knowing if I had a small leak I bought my 4th gallon to use.
