I was in dire need of a card reader one Sunday evening, so I searched the national network for web reviews on this card using a local brick store and mortar. Many of the reviews were negative, saying the included USB cable was cheap. But since I had a few extra cables that size, I didn't bother and grabbed one anyway. The reader worked fine the first two uses (with the original cable) but today it kept disappearing and then reappearing in Windows XP. I've been removing and replacing my CF II card several times to see if it works when I suddenly started noticing a burning smell. Of course, the card reader was hot and smelled like burnt plastic. I've never had a peripheral burn, but there's always a first time. Looking at this article here on Revain I noticed that it is a branded product. Mercury but listed as a Targus product. I have the same model but under the Targus brand so I don't know who the actual OEM is in this case. In any case, I would stay away from this card reader.
