Covers are soft on the outside. They appear to be waterproof on the inside as water remains inside after washing. I had to turn them inside out (hang dry) to dry for about 15 minutes. Then I turned them over and let them dry completely. I bought them to fill with organic buckwheat hulls (15 pounds filled). There were no problems with leakage. I turned around twice. go in opposite directions. and then put on a regular pillowcase. This 4-pack makes it easy to swap out the outer cover on wash day. Good product! Highly recommended!
