My 4 year old daughter gets a star for every 20 minutes she writes the alphabet with me! Five stars = small toy. While we love hearing stories about children from other planets who are intrinsically motivated to better themselves, we're still working for a mermaid here. Also, I teach elementary school kids, and smaller, more frequent rewards work better than rewards, which can be bigger but last longer. Especially for small children.
