Review on HIC Nylon Mesh Strainer 4 Inch by Nick Moo

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Less than advertised. 4 " will not fit kefir grains.

4" extra small - measures 3" on sides. Inner mesh measures approx 2-5/8". Without the attached label that said 4 inches I would have thought I had 3 inches. (Then 3 inches should be REALLY small.) If you plan on using it for kefir, it won't even hold a tablespoon of grains without spilling kefir. And while the meshes are the perfect size, the small diameter doesn't work for rinsing raw quinoa or amaranth unless you're only washing 1-2 tablespoons at a time. I've heard from other reviews that the larger sizes also have wider meshes So the quinoa is going through, which is the problem I'm having. Stainless Steel (SS) Screens As for kefir, you can use your SS screens without worrying about metal reactions. This is what my local raw food farmer uses (but I have some frozen beans that don't multiply, so who knows.) Apparently, only kombucha necessarily reacts with SS, and that's because kombucha attracts and chelates heavy metals, so it pulls nickel can and chrome from SS. Another reason for the bad review is that there is no indication that it is made without BPA, PVC and phthalates. Seller, w answering other questions here, preferred to remain silent for now. I just posted another question in the thread so we'll see if they answer. There is no indication on the label that they contain no BPA at all (although the other materials mentioned are no less dangerous than BPA). But there's also no California Prop 65 warning on the label. I gave this 3 stars instead of 1 because nylon webbing is hard to come by and I think it can be useful at times. However, as I am concerned about possible hormone-disrupting toxicity, it would be wise to stick with using an SS screen or, at best, organic gauze.
