Description of HIC Nylon Mesh Strainer 4 Inch

Excellent for straining kefir

Excellent for straining kefir. Brings out all the curd. Wide neck glasses are suitable for this. Not ordinary. But I strain mine in Tupperware first before bottling. UPDATE: Works so well I bought a second one. As others have said, I haven't seen a nylon mesh strainer in stores. Since I make kefir daily, I wash it more than once a day. No smells, no dirt sticking in between. Mine hasn't broken yet. I get smooth and creamy kefir, and it collects all the curds - big and small. Highly recommended…

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Without automatic straining

Great for another purpose

I bought this nylon strainer to filter the kefir fungus out of the kefir itself. The problem is that the nylon webbings are bonded together so tightly that thick liquids have a hard time getting into the container. Kefir can have a buttermilk consistency, and that consistency is not ideal for this strainer. If I were making broth, iced tea, or any other liquid that I needed to filter out the smallest particles from, that would work fine. product, just my own error with the dimensions. I'll…

good size, 4 inch, suitable for kitchen utensils and gadgets

Got this for kefir. the mesh corresponds to the outer ring, which cannot be sterilized. So no fuss! I can use it for powdered sugar, sifting tea and diluting kefir. I might buy another one for other, oilier purposes. 4 inches is definitely a good standard size. I am not enthusiastic about the small levers on the sides for relaxing. They require you to use a certain size bowl, my old colander has a single lever that is about 3/4 inch long before it bends. You can position it over pots, large…

Exactly what I needed!

I ordered this strainer for making kefir. For my purposes, this is the ideal size of 4 inches, and the strainer is the right size for straining kefir fungi after kefir has fermented and then rinsing the fungus before starting a new batch. It's easy to wash and the mesh seems durable for this use.Nylon doesn't absorb odors, so it's fresh for each batch, with no residual odors from the previous batch. This strainer has made making kefir much easier for me, and I... ordering another one for my…

Not suitable for milk kefir, smaller than stated, took a month to ship

This was recommended to me in a kit on Revain when I bought a kefir starter to start making kefir. The kefir flavors arrived in a large box within a week and took a month to ship. The screen isn't 4 inches, it's actually smaller. When I finally tried to strain milk kefir it was too thick to go through the nylon mesh, it would take hours to strain it all. I wish I hadn't. Bought this and wasted my money. I used a lemon squeezer (not metal) to strain the kefir and the grain count kept growing, I…

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • Empty

Less than advertised. 4 " will not fit kefir grains.

4" extra small - measures 3" on sides. Inner mesh measures approx 2-5/8". Without the attached label that said 4 inches I would have thought I had 3 inches. (Then 3 inches should be REALLY small.) If you plan on using it for kefir, it won't even hold a tablespoon of grains without spilling kefir. And while the meshes are the perfect size, the small diameter doesn't work for rinsing raw quinoa or amaranth unless you're only washing 1-2 tablespoons at a time. I've heard from other reviews that…
