Really necessary if looks are important to you. There can be variances between motherboards and cases these days, and you won't know until you find out the hard way. The fact is that on modern motherboards we find the RGB logo and in most cases it is partially obscured by large fans on the back of the PC. In some cases they took care of that and put the motherboard in the recess and the RGB logo became visible; others don't, and that's where a low-profile fan like this one comes in handy. This at least partially improves the visualization. As for the noise; I can not hear. Cooling is the same as any other cheap or expensive fan; no difference in heat dissipation. What I don't like about these fans is the white logo sticker; it's eye-catching, and if looks are important to you, you should cover it up, like I did.
