I put it on 1" poles. I had to use the spacers that came with it and a few extra rubber sleeves. But once in place, it stays secure. They aren't designed to be heavy Holding items but are great places to mount cell phone holders bike gps mounts and other similar lightweight items I have a bike gps and side mirror attached to mine works great you can also center the crossbar or off the mounting stem moved, which is also a plus.
