Review on ๐ŸŽง Microsoft RJN-00061 Modern USB Headset by Marco Habersham

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Think of a phone headset, not headphones.

This is a lightweight headset specially tuned for phone commands and audio. 100% locked. no twist or tilt. Multimedia audio is mediocre at best. We're testing Microsoft Teams phones and my bluetooth headset can't handle it. Having used Plantronics headsets for phones for many years, I understand that a quality and durable headset can feel cheap and unreliable at first. This modern Microsoft USB headset looks just like that. I think this is a quality product that should be as light as possible for maximum comfort. Comfort falls apart as the headband is the only truly adjustable part of this headset. Of course, the microphone rotates on the boom, but it doesn't go in and out. The ear cups don't rotate at all either, so I get more pressure on the back of the cups than the front on my oddly shaped head and it feels like the headset is trying to squeeze the front of my head. That's enough of the problem that I'm returning the headset. The cable that comes with it is a decent length and appears to be a good cable. it rose well overnight and has medium softness/flexibility. The ear pads are rigid and hollow so they "amplify" the sounds of movement/scratching of the beard. The controller has a mixed effect at best. On Windows 10, the buttons for certain commands didn't seem to work at all, even with the Microsoft app installed. In Windows 11, commands and call buttons worked fine. The speakers are tuned for the human voice and sound great for dialogue, but poor for music and multimedia. Even the equalization apps don't seem to change the sound of the headset, I think due to the USB nature of the headset and the definition of the audio interface in the system. So the sound is largely unregulated. If you have a normal head and are primarily concerned with the quality of the call, then this is a great headset. If you're looking for a "universal" headset for people of all shapes and sizes, I'd go for a more customizable headset. Next I'm going to try the Poly Blackwire 5220, which should tick all the boxes except for the team-optimized controller.
