Works cool but watch out for RFI

This delivery worked much better than expected. I was ready to upgrade all the capacitors but no problems so far. If you want to be careful, the recommended capacitor is Panasonic EEU-FRH331LB, 330uF/50V. The heatsinks are floating so they can be safely grounded. The negative input and output terminals are connected together. Tested with an input voltage of 14.2V. The output voltage was well regulated, better than 0.1% with a 0-3A load. It could be adjusted from 1.25 to 13.9V with a 4 ohm load will. (At maximum voltage, the switch stops. Reaching within 0.3V of the input exceeds specifications.) Heating was minimal at the 12V, 3A output. With an open power source on the workbench, the temperature of no component exceeded the ambient temperature by 8 degrees Celsius. I haven't tested at higher currents but assumed it should be comfortable at 6-8A or so. RFI tested at 12V, 3A rating. The output ripple is 25mVp-p at 20MHz bandwidth and the primary switching frequency is 180kHz. There is also a broadband signal at 60MHz which is 250mVp-p. The input ripple was 0.95Vp-p at 20MHz bandwidth, with a large drop at 60MHz of 3Vp-p. This power supply REQUIRES an additional input filter, both normal and common. Added mode to input to avoid radio interference due to conducted emissions, otherwise it easily violates FCC Part 15 limits. Output must have at least one common mode choke. RFI is the reason I give this 4 stars. - Gary NA6O
