This 5.25 inch drive enclosure design is nothing new. I have an old IDE/ATA FireWire case made by ByTecc a few years ago with the exact same design, just silver. It's a new design, painted black, and an obviously modified controller (in this case, a SATA -> USB 3.0 bridge). I chose it for my LG Electronics 14x. Software Free SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter, Black (WH14NS40) knowing I'll be limited to x6 Blu-ray speeds until I get a new computer with USB 3.0. This has been found with Mac OS 10.8 with no problems and writing to the installed drive works great (and uses the USB 2.0 interface with no problems). The fan makes a small noise (as you'd expect, it's a fan after all) and the case has a BRIGHT blue LED that blinks when the drive is being accessed. I disabled the LED by disconnecting the power (see photo I uploaded). My Mac identifies the enclosure as: USB to SATA Bridge: Product ID: 0x2773 Vendor ID: 0x067b (Prolific Technology, Inc.) Version: 1.00 Serial Number: PROLIFICMP000000028 Speed: Up to 480Mbps (Note that my system does NOT currently support USB 3.0) Manufacturer: Prolific Technology Inc. Current Required (mA): 100
