This 5v adapter kit works exactly as described. It allows you to connect to your car's 12V voltage with a fuse tap or a wire tap. While a cable is cheaper, I would recommend a fused cable just so you can't fry that adapter or whatever is plugged into it (DVR or phone). The product itself is pretty simple. Connect the red end to power and the black end to ground and the voltage drops to 5V and 1.2A. I connected the power to the fuse tap (I have this adapter E Support 12V Car Add-a -Circuit Fuse uses TAP Adapter Mini ATM APM Blade Fuse Holder 5pcs) which plugs into the cigarette lighter socket in my car to power it. switch on and off with the car. It also has a red indicator in the converter box so you can see if it's on. It has a lot of wires (too many for my needs, but too many is better than too few), so length doesn't matter. Many other reviewers complain that their dash cam stops working when they think it's connected to a computer. I haven't encountered this problem, but you can easily fix it by cutting the data wires in the USB cable if necessary (and if you know what you're doing). Another complaint is that the adapter only supplies 1.2A, which is pretty slow for many large phones like the Note, Galaxy S5+ or iPhone 6/6S Plus. Keep this in mind as it may not be able to match your phone's power consumption, so it may just drain your battery (albeit much slower). Overall great product, I would buy again!
